My Favorite Challenge Week 5 - Traveling

Have you ever wanted to just travel the world and be totally free to do so? Ahhh, the life of our jet-setting Who's That Girl this week. Only one small problem for her. She has the map backwards according to my husband. Smileys

This week's My Favorite Challenge is paper piecing. Now, it's well known amongst my family that this is not not of my favorite techniques. However, I am getting better at liking it. So I pulled out my box of designer scraps and stamped Who's That Girl and the stacked suitcases on the scraps. Once the dress, stickered suitcase and stacked suitcases were cut out, I colored the rest of my image with prismacolor markers. Once that was done, I then pulled out my Making Memories traveling designer paper I've had for a while and my Making Memories traveling accessories so it would all match up. The ribbon is from my scraps I've had for a long while.

Here's a close up of the paper pieced main image.

If you haven't joined any of the My Favorite Challenges, you should. They're all about fun, and getting to know more about the Design Team, and other stampers that hang out in the challenge and chat thread.

Summer Stamp Star Design Challenge!!

Cornish Heritage Farms is have a five week, yes count them FIVE week, guest star design challenge. Each week there will be a $50 rubber stampin credit winner, with the stamper that participates in all five weeks being considered for a guest design spot for their September release. You can find all of the details here.

I decided for my first week's entry, coloring (my favorite technique) to use the Saturday Evening Post Pastoral Woman stamp that had just been begging to see some ink. I've had this stamp for awhile and just hadn't inked it up yet. So, I stamped it in memento tuxedo black ink on vanilla cardstock and then colored with prismacolor markers making sure my blending brought out plenty of lighter areas to resemble an "old" painting. After coloring the image, I then stippled Tim Holtz old paper and tea stain distress ink lightly over and on the sides of the image before distressing the actual sides of the image panel.

Wanting to keep the "old fashioned" lattice look that was behind the grape arbor, I pulled out a retired CHF lattice backgrounder and stamped that in Stampin Up elegant eggplant on the same cardstock. After adding some vintage looking lace, I then stacked some primas in co-ordinating colors and added a purple gem sticker, some brads on the pastoral panel with dimensionals and finally the card, or painting, is done.

Will you try the Summer Stamp Star Design Challenge? I did.

Aloha!

Aloha! So what do it mean when we say that? By definition: aloha is a traditional greeting or farewell.

Here's another card I've had in the archives of the computer for quite a while and have just forgotten to post. It's from Lizzie Anne Designs, their Garden Isle set, and just goes to show the versatility of the set. I showed an earlier post using the little hula girl surfing, and now just with the flowers in the set.

For this card, I used some Die Cuts With A View pre-cut mat paper with Stampin Up regal rose, sponged around the edges of both before stamping to create my own "designer paper". After stamping, cutting, and adhering the main images, I stamped the saying in the bottom right corner. The card took a total of about 20min to make with most of the time being taken up with the cutting.

A very clean and simple card that can be made in a matter of minutes.

June Blog Hop!

Oh my goodness, it's time for another blog hop again.

Welcome to my humble blog. This months summer theme is right up my "alley". I love lazy summer days at the beach, just listening to the ocean waves as they crash on the sand, and the wind whistling through my hair, the feel of the sand between my toes.

With this in mind I decided to use as my inspiration the beach, or the ocean. To be more specific, Pacific Grove, California and Monterey, California. I pulled out some pictures my grandfather had taken of the ocean, and the beach, on the famous 17mile drive between Pacific Grove and Carmel-by-the-sea. Recognize the Lone Cypress? It's one of the most photographed trees in California.

I was so inspired by these photographs, that I was able to come up with the following card. Using several different sets, I was able to mimic the tide pools I remember going to with my grandpa while growing up, and bring in the flowers from the upper picture. The rocks were created by using the turtle shell from Pond Life, and the tide pool ripples are from the same set. The flowers are from Forest Friends, sailboat from Men of Life, and sayings from Life.

I hope you enjoyed your trip to my blog and received a little inspiration.

Stamps: Life, Pond Life, Men of Life, Forest Friends

Ink: Raspberry Fizz, Hibiscus, Berry Sorbet, Spring Rain, Melon Berry, Ocean Tides

Pirate Ben

Another quickie post, and another Ben Paper Doll card. I'm just having too much fun with this set right now and the DCWV boys papers. It took me forever to get the set inky, and now I'm on a roll.

Seriously, if you do not have this set from MFT, you have to get it!!

I stamped our little pirate in memento black and colored with prismacolor markers and blended everything to look kind of like faded pants and old leather. After coloring, I cut out Ben's outfit and glued it over him, including the hat and eye patch. I then stippled creamy caramel for the sandy beach, bashful blue for the ocean, and soft sky for the sky

Here's a close up of my little pirate.

Alien Friends

I'm not quite done playing with paper dolls yet. Now that's Stephanie Fizer's Ben Paper Dolls by My Favorite Things. This set is so cool to work with.

I'm also still playing with my Die Cuts With A View All About Boys mat stack too. This stack of designer papers has so many fun papers just for boy cards. Fabulous!!!

For this card I stamped Ben seperately in memento tuxedo black ink and colored only his face and hair before cutting him out from the waist up. I then stamped the little alien and space suit in memento black and colored with prismacolor markers, cut out and cut out the face-plate so Ben's face would show through. Assembled the card, added a button and the card was done. Perfect!!

Happy Father's Day!

I would like to take a moment to wish all of the fathers out there a Happy Father's Day!

I've attached the cards I sent to my dad and my step-dad for Father's Day. Both cards were made using Papertrey Ink's Pond Life stamp set.

This set is so versatile. I stamped the "rock" using the turtles shell twice in Stampin Up's basic gray dye ink and cut one out to pop up later with dimensionals. The mallard duck was stamped in PTI's new leaf ink and the duck's wing in Stampin Up's bravo burgundy, then cut the duck out and popped up on all night media pop dots. The reeds and cattail were stamped in PTI new leaf, ocean tides & dark chocolate. I then stippled Stampin Up's soft sky around the top to fill in the white areas and Stampin Up bashful blue for water at the bottom before layering. Although the pictures do not show it very well, the center strip of cardstock is Stampin Up's creamy caramel.

Since my step-dad is a practical joker, I included the frog from PTI's Pond Life his card.

To all the father's out there, enjoy your day.

Garden Stocking - My Time To Create!

Ok, this week Lauren decided to throw a curve ball at me by making me create our own patterned paper with our templates. Hmmmm, what to do, what to do? Oh, yeah, let's pull out the template I printed, cut out, and started to work with, and just never finished. I'll just finish it within Lauren's guidelines, right?

Well, the template I had printed out was the stocking stuffer one when her templates had first come out, so that tells you how long this has been sitting unfinished. So that part's been done....check!

Ok, make own patterned paper. Since I printed the template on plain white cardstock, I wanted to stamp on that too, even wwaaaayyyy back then when I first started this project, so I had pulled out Garden of Life and Butterfly Kisses. Who says stockings need to be just for Christmas, right? I had done the stamping a while ago in baja breeze, riding hood red, kiwi kiss and pacific pointe just to see how a "floral" stocking would look. Now all of those colors are retiring for Stampin Up! So my patterned paper was already done for the challenged. Check!

All that seemed to be left was assembly and decorating. Wait!!! Assembly....done! Dust that project off instead!!! Decorating to the rescue!

I found primas and pearl stickers to decorate the front with and then decided to do the same with the backside so it would look uniform. Now what else to have in a garden? A butterfly flying about! Since there are smaller butterflies on the backside, I stamped a larger one in baja breeze and pacific pointe, cut it out and made it look like it was landing on the stocking by pinching the wings up.

Now the back of the stocking.

My original intent with starting the stocking a while ago was to prove to myself I could do these 3-D packages, and/or stamping. Now that I've done a few, if I can do them, anyone can. Hmmm, think I can teach my husband to do one while he's laid up with a broken ankle?

Superkid!

It's Celebrate MFT Day!!!! On the 20th of every month, all the MFT Junkie's pull out our new stuff, stuff that needs inking, etc, and celebrate everything that's My Favorite Things.

This month we had a small challenge associated with our celebration - anything and everything that's Stephanie Fizer, one of MFT's set designers.

I decided to use one of my sets that needed to see some ink - Ben's Paper Dolls. It's a really cute set just for boys even though the name has paper dolls in it.

I started off by stampin my images in memento tuxedo black on MFT perfect panels and then coloring with prismacolor markers. Let me tell you, these panels let you color like a dream. I then paired my colored images up with some awesome Die Cuts With a View All About Boys Paper that totally reminded me of the old Batman & Robin TV shows when the "Bop" Wham" and stuff like that would show up on the screen. Add a small bow, stippling around the images, some buttons with thread and our superhero is finished.

Little Surfer Girl

Little surfer little one,
Made my heart come all undone
Do you love me, do you surfer girl
Surfer girl my little surfer girl

I have watched you on the shore
Standing by the oceans roar
Do you love me do you surfer girl
Surfer girl surfer girl

Anyone remember that song by the Beach Boys? Although I didn't grow up during the Beach Boys era, my mom played their songs a lot during my teen years so, I heard them quit a bit later on. Now my own kids get a healthy dose from time to time.

That's what I remember whenever I use this set from Lizzie Anne Designs. The surf board and hula girl when combined just start that song going through my head. This set is more of a two-step stamping set than just coloring although it can be used both ways. I stamped the flowers PTI berry sorbet and spring moss before stamping the outlines in pallet noir black. The hula girl & surf board were stamped in memento black and then colored with Stampin Up markers. Stampin Up! regal rose is stamped in the background and sponged around the edges of the cardstock.

Overall a very simple design and card to make.

All Grown Up?

Have you ever needed a birthday card with a punchline? This set from The Cat's Pajamas is just for you. It's cute (love those penguins), flexible for male/female, and definitely has a couple of punchlines to be used.

For this card, I chose to put the punchline on the outside of the card, and the Happy Birthday on the inside. In fact, I made a card just like this for my "little" brother. I say that little lightly too. He's only four years younger than me, but he's taller, smarter than me and makes way more money than I do.

I stamped the penguins and cupcake in memento tuxedo black and colored them with prismacolor markers before stippling Stampin Up! green galore dye ink around the edges. For the border, I used a retired Stampin Up! color, cool caribbean. Once my layers were added, I then added diamond ice stickles to the cupcake sprinkles to add some sparkle.

I then stamped the inside saying and the image, colored, added my ribbon and was done. Easy peasy as a friend of mine would say. :)

Remember Our Troops

Here's another Thomas Kincade found in my computer I had submitted for publication, this time to Cards Magazine last year that didn't make it.

I love this image because it reminds me of a quiet, small town street, and just has such a warm feeling to it.

The image is stamped in memento tuxedo black and colored with prismacolor markers. The only embellishments used are the gold brads in the corners and a simple yellow ribbon folded in the street.

With Flag Day having just past, the Fourth of July coming up, and tensions in the Middle East escalating, please remember our troops serving overseas, Europe, or wherever their orders may take them. Say a prayer for them; for their safety during their service, and for their safe return home.

Candy Jar and Migraines

I started to write this post yesterday, however, the migraine I had just wouldn't let me finish.

This was my entry for the June Ambassador Challenge in the My Favorite Things Forum. The challenge was to stamp something clear: packaging, acetate, whatever we might find. In fact, it was the fastest challenge I've ever done: start to finish even while on migraine meds.

I stamped my images with memento tuxedo black ink and colored with koh-i-noor pencils and a prismacolor blender marker. This has become one of my new favorite techniques because of the smooth results I'm getting and how portable it is. After coloring, I stippled Stampin Up! pretty in pink dye in all around the image, punched it out using both the giga and jumbo giga scallop punches and then highlighted the chocolate chip layer with a white signo gel pen. After adding prima flowers I found on clearance at Michaels, some uber cool ribbon from MFT, I was ready to fill my candy jar.

Now how simple is that!!!! Maybe 10-15min flat! And even while on migraine meds too!

World Cardmaking Kincades

Second Post Today.

While cleaning out some of my computer photos, I came across a couple of Thomas Kincade cards I hadn't uploaded since they were submitted to Paper Crafts for their World Cardmaking contest last October. Unfortunately, I wasn't one of the finalists, however, I'm still a winner in my opinion because I actually got them done and sent in so that's an accomplishment for me. Submitting is always makes me so nervous to the point I sometimes back out and that just drives my husband totally nuts. Free Smileys

Stonehearth Hutch is one of my favorite Thomas Kincade images Cornish Heritage Farms produces. This image I stamped in pallet noir on watercolor paper and then watercolored using Stampin Up's Watercolor Wonder Crayons and an aquapainter. The Christmas tree lights and wreath ribbon were highlighted with Prismacolor markers.

Vintage Skating Pond was stamped in Stampin Up! basic brown dye ink on white paper and colored with colored pencils using the spotlighting technique. I only wanted certain areas of the house and the skating pond colored so your eyes were drawn to the middle.

The edges were distressed with Stampin Up's distressing tool and the main panel popped up on dimensionals. As a friend of mine would say, easy peasy!

Two different Thomas Kincade stamps, two different coloring mediums and two different end results, however, both still classy.

Stamps: CHF Thomas Kincade Stonehearth Hutch, Skaters Pond

Ink: Pallet Noir Black, Stampin Up Basic Brown

Rocky Shores

Anyone who knows me, understands my love of lighthouses. When GinaK Designs came out with the Guiding Light set last month, I had to get it.

My step-dad's birthday is coming up on Monday, June 15th and I thought this set would be perfect for a him. I wanted to tryout a new technique I had discovered with using Koh-I-Noor pencils with the Prismacolor marker blender with the set too. Unfortunately, the picture didn't come out like I hoped it would because the colors are just vibrant against GinaK's digital papers.

The distressed edges of the main panel are popped up on dimensionals as well as is the rowboat with Stampin Up soft sky lightly stippled in the background to give a "foggy" appearance over the ocean waters.

Gotta Learn To Relax

Now for those of us that have four legged children, learning to relax can be an issue......for them that is. Free Smileys

Now, take Midnight here for example. She's always sleeping on her back, paws in the air, and not a care in the world, Mom and Dad will take care of everything for her. However, do not wake her up. You will be told off! This cat does think she's talks, or at least chatters a lot at you and only she understands what she's saying.

Sometimes learning to relax means you have to learn to share the recliner with Mom after a long days work...

or learning to share the stamping chair with Mom or another four legged sibling. Sometimes this doesn't always work out, and a heated "discussion" breaks out between the fur children.

The hardest part about relaxing is when Mom doesn't understand that a box is more fun...

than the toys that came in it. Who cares that it was Mom's stamp toys in the box. Finders keepers!

My Favorite Bunny

The last several weeks, I have either been running a day late with the dollar short, or a week late with several dollars short. Free Smileys It took everything I had just to get the MFT Idol challenges done. Along this note, one of our MFT Junkies had a baby a little over a week ago, and you guessed it, I'm late sending my baby card out.

So I took the opportunity to finally get a sketch challenge done and finally complete her baby card at the same time....double dipping! Oh, that's only not allowed with the challenges. Sorry.
I stamped my Cuddle Bunnies twice on white cardstock and colored with Koh-I-Noor pencils and a Prismacolor blender marker....my new favorite technique; as well as the teddy bear. Babies have to have a teddy bear to cuddle with when they get older..right? Once the images were colored I lightly stippled Stampin Up soft sky ink over the main image, and then Stampin Up pretty in pink around the sides before adding my layers and ribbon. Cut out the second set of bunnies and popped them up on dimensionals as seen below.

Punched out the teddy bear and stippled the pretty in pink dye ink around him, also popped him up on dimensionals and covered one of the button brads.

Isn't mom and baby cute??? If you don't have this set yet, you need to get it!

Ice Cream Sundae Three Ways

My husband recently broke his ankle in three places, called a tri-malleolar fracture, and had to have a plate with screws put into the ankle to fix everything. While he was in the hospital waiting to be discharged, I took a bunch of pre-stamped images with me to color. Since I work at the hospital, I know it takes just about as long to do the paperwork for discharge, as it does to get the ok to get the patient out of there. So, I was going to make sure I was not bored at all. The ice cream sundae image is from a retired Stampin Up! set called Sweet Treats which is perfect since I needed to have several birthday cards ready to send out.

Once I got my husband, and my images home, it was easy to get to work. All that's necessary, is to take the colored image and using the same color scheme make three different types of cards; using scraps, full cardstock like a one sheet wonder, just moving the image around on the card.

For my first card, I chose to do a traditional layout with metallic stickers on the side.

The second card has the image off to the right side with felt flower stickers overlapping the image and bling in the center.

The third card has the image up in the top right corner with flowers on the left with bling in the centers.

Each card only took about 10 minutes to make and each have Stampin Up! pretty in pink dye ink lightly stippled over and around the image.

Pre-stamping images to take along to color at a doctor's office, hospital, or anywhere you're going to be stuck for long periods of time is a great way to have images ready to use at a later date when you're in a hurry and need a "quick card".

We Love Rock N Roll

I may be dating myself here, but I grew up listening to Joan Jett & the Blackhearts song I Love Rock N Roll. Can't you just see these girls playing that?

They are part of My Favorite Things newest release by artist Stephanie Fizer. This weeks My Favorite Challenge was to use three different types of designer paper; not a problem if you have a lot of designer paper lying around or a lot of designer paper scraps like I do. :) So I pulled out my box, and gallon baggie, of scraps to see which ones would match up with each other and look cute as little girls dresses since I was planning on paper piecing the dresses instead of coloring. Halfway through my project I ran into a slight problem. Since the girls were being stamped on scrap cardstock and being popped up on mini pop dots, that meant I either had to paper piece the dresses twice, or color the bottom layer. Do you know how hard it is to match markers up to designer paper? Very hard. However, it can be done. A very slow process, but it can be done.

Once all of my coloring, and paper piecing was done, it was time to pop up my musicians and add a little background color. The bottom picture shows the dimension.

After stippling some Stampin Up creamy caramel and close to cocoa dye ink for a stage, I added soft sky for a light "curtain" effect the spritzed a Stampin Up! rose red marker to add a "light show" effect around the girls.

Pencils, Kincade and Mice!

Have you ever had a total "oh duh!" moment? I had one of those in Michaels the other day when I was pricing their Koh-I-Noor woodless pencils and comparing them to the prices online. I have an old set that needs replacing plus a Prismacolor 72 pencil set I bought on ebay several years ago and have never gotten the "full effect" out of them since I can't use mineral spirits or gamsel with my asthma. While I was in that particular aisle, I saw Prismacolor's new "pencil accessory set" that contains their blender pencil, alcohol marker blender, eraser, pencil extender/extension, and some other do-hickey I've never seen before.

What really caught my eye was the alcohol marker blender. I use that to blend my Prismacolor markers!!! Well duh! You mean to tell me I could have been using that blender marker all this time with my pencils? After seeing that set, I got out of Michaels in record time to get home and try it out on a couple of images I had colored when my husband came home from the hospital after having surgery for a broken ankle.

The first image I tried blending was a House Mouse one from Stampendous, and it came out beautifully! Just like I do when I'm blending with my markers, I started with the lighter colors first, beginning in the middle and then working to the outside.

Once I was done blending everything, I then stippled Stampin Up soft sky ink lightly over everything to give a soft "satin" feel to the image and the card once I started assembling it. I made sure the embellishments used were small to match the "size" of the mouse.

Here's a close up of the card details:

After finishing with my House Mouse card, I began to wonder how this technique would look with a more detailed image so out came one of my Thomas Kincade images I had received in a swap. Now this image was a little bit of an unknown since it was stamped in Tim Holtz walnut distress ink so I wasn't sure if the ink would run when the pencils were blended. As you can see, the ink stayed put and everything blended great. In fact, I think this technique works great with Cornish Heritage Farms Thomas Kincade images. With the image below, I didn't color in the sky, but chose to stipple it instead with Stampin Up soft sky dye ink again.

And a close up of the card:

I'm really happy with the way these cards turned out and just wish I had discovered I could use my blender marker a whole lot sooner. Needless to say, I have a bunch of blender markers on order. :)
